Amritsar family suicide: ex-SSP, DSP summoned as accused

Amritsar: The court of Additional Sessions Judge Monika Goyal has summoned former Amritsar SSP Kultar Singh and DSP Hardev Singh as additional accused in a case dating back to 2004.

Five members of a family, Hardip Singh, his wife Romi, their children Imu and Sonu, and Hardip’s mother had then committed suicide.

Found scribbled on the walls of the victims’ house at Chowk Moni were the names of certain persons, including police officials, who the victims alleged had driven them to taking the extreme step.

In October 2015, Sarabjit Singh Verka of the Punjab Human Rights Organisation (PHRO) moved the trial court under Section 319, CrPC, claiming that there was enough evidence on record for summoning the former SSP along with the then SHO Hardev Singh and two relatives of the deceased, Jaswinder Singh and Manmohan Singh, as additional accused.

Advocate Puneet Zakhmi said that the court had summoned the two police officers on February 8.

Earlier in 2009, one of them was summoned as accused. But the orders were set aside by the Sessions Court after evidence went missing from the court file in 2014.

While Kultar Singh retired as DIG some years ago, Hardev Singh is now DSP, Zira, Ferozepur.
