Amritsar, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Chandigarh to be made smart cities in 5 yrs

Golden_TempleJalandhar: It’s official. Six cities, including Amritsar, Jalandhar and Ludhiana, and the union territory of Chandigarh have made it to the list of 98 smart cities that will be part of the Narendra Modi government’s ambitious project for the next five years.

Besides Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Amritsar in Punjab, Karnal and Faridabad in Haryana and Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh have found a place in the coveted list. Chandigarh also figures on the list.Union minister of urban development Venkaiah Naidu released the list of 98 cities at a press conference on Thursday.

The Jammu and Kashmir government has asked for more time to decide on the potential smart city.

WHAT THEY GET

Each smart city would get a central assistance of Rs 100 crore per year for five years from the government.

The cities were selected on the basis of a competition held on parameters such as service levels, financial and institutional capacity, past track record and reforms.

Thirteen cities have been selected in Uttar Pradesh, the most from any state, and 12 from Tamil Nadu.
