Chandigarh: Former chief minister and Congress leader Capt Amarinder Singh along with other party leaders arrived at the residence of Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal here on Friday morning to stage a dharna to raise demands related to the state, especially farmers.
Capt Amarinder was accompanied by Sunil Jakhar and Rana Gurjit Singh among other Congress leaders and workers. The leaders were taking turns making speeches with regard to problems faced by residents of the state, particularly demanding the payment of dues of sugarcane growers. They alleged that two-lakh cane farmers would be out of job.
Only 21 of 43 Congress MLAs participated in the protest demonstration. Senior leaders Partap Singh Bajwa, Rajinder Kaur Bhattal and Lal Singh stayed away from the show.
Chief Minister Badal was initially seen waiting outside his residence to ‘receive’ the Congress leaders, but had to leave before the protesters arrived as he was scheduled to meet a visiting foreign delegation.
Speaking with the media, the Chief Minister said: “I was here at 11 am to welcome my guests…they did not arrive till 11.20 and as I have to meet a Korean delegation I am going.”
He said it would have been nice if the Congress leaders came inside to discuss the issues over a cup of tea.
