Drugs issue: One ‘stupid statement’ puts Congress on back foot

Sukhpal Bhullar & Rahul GandhiTarn-Taran: Through one ‘stupid statement’ that he made in his home district Tarn Taran in the presence of former CM Capt Amarinder Singh, district Congress Sukhpal Singh Bhullar not only put his party on the back foot, but, also deprived his party off a significant poll issue of drugs.

Bhullar is in trouble after he promised to open poppy husk outlets and permission to brew hooch for personal use if Congress is voted to power in Punjab .

Interestingly, he made this statement in a public rally which was also attended by Congress Deputy Leader in Lokk Sabha and Amritsar MP Captain Amrinder Singh at Amarkot recently.

Son of former Cabinet Minister and senior Congress leader Gurchet Singh Bhullar,Sukhpal is a staunch supporter of Captain Amrinder Singh.

While making such stupid announcement Bhullar forget that how his party including senior leader Rahul Gandhi, was making all-frontal attacks on the SAD-BJP combine government over the issue of drugs.

Punjab Congress President Pratap Singh Bajwa has issued a show cause notice to Bhullar asking him to clarify why he made an irresponsible statement like this.

Slamming Bhullar, Bajwa has said that Bhullar’s views on poppy husk and hooch are personal and Congress party has nothing to do with it.

“It is our solemn commitment to the people that the Congress after coming to power in Punjab in 2017 Assembly elections will enact special laws against offences related to drugs and set up special courts. It is our guarantee to wipe out this scourge from Punjab that is now a blot on the face of this once the most prosperous state for which the present Akali Dal-BJP alliance government is responsible as the involvement of the leaders from the two parties in drug trade has repeatedly been established,” Pratap Singh Bajwa said.

Bajwa made it clear that what Bhullar said at Amarkot could be the views of  an individual  from  which the party completely dissociates itself.

He said he had been asked as to how could he violate the party discipline  and  make such promises to the people despite his being aware that the Congress has persistently   been campaigning against drugs at every level and  demanding CBI
probe monitored by the judiciary in view of the involvement of ruling alliance’s biggies.

Bhullar had however, clarified that his statement was distorted by media. He said that he had only said that the poppy husk vends should be considered to save the lives fo the people who were on hard drugs and were dying of withdrawal symptoms.

“The only way to get rid of heroine is to legalise it. US did the same. The drugs being produced illegally are impure which are killing Punjab youths,” Sukhpal Singh Bhullar said in a statement.

Sukhpal Singh Bhullar is not the only Punjab leader who had favoured a licensed sale of poppy husk and hooch in the state.Earlier in Jaunary this year,Akali Dal supporter and Bhartiya Kisan Union (BK) President and Chairman Punuab Mandi Board, Ajmer Singh Lakhowal had also demanded licences for opium cultivation and distilling hooch to reduce dependency on drugs.
