Jalandhar: The City Police have booked Tushar Gandhi, great grandson of the father of the nation Mahatma Gandhi, for allegedly hurting the sentiments of the people on a complaint from local BJP leader Kishan Lal Sharma. In his complaint to police commissioner Yurinder Singh Hayer, Sharma had accused Gandhi of insulting Shaheed Bhagat Singh at a function in Jaipur on May 8.
Sharma said, “Gandhi’s statement that Shaheed Bhagat Singh was a criminal for British rulers and thus Mahatma Gandhi did not intervene to get his death sentence commuted is an insult of the martyr.”
The commissioner had forwarded Sharma’s complaint to ADCP (crime) J Elanchezhian for inquiry, who found the complaint to be genuine and ordered police station-8 SHO Bimal Kant to register a case.
Kant said a case had been registered against Gandhi under Section 295-A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs) of the Indian Penal Code.
Later in the day, BJP workers led by Sharma burnt the effigy of Gandhi at the Bhagat Singh Chowk.
